A History of High Achievers: The First African-American Professionals of Spring Hill In-Person
We're celebrating Spring Hill's Black History this month. At one time, 60% of the people that lived in Spring Hill were African American and the community they shared and the way everyone in town got along had the effect of inspiring an amazing number of high achievers. Lifelong resident Sandra Buford will tell the story of what it was like to grow up here, before and after integration, and if racism affected this once small town. She'll introduce you to the first black policeman on the local force, the first black Alderman/Vice Mayor for Spring Hill, as well as the many first black professionals were raised here and business owners that kept this town running smoothly. There was also a community within a community, and Mrs. Buford will take you back to when there were shared gardens, communal hog killings, and how the churches got together for special occasions like foot washing ceremonies. You'll also be introduced to one our most famous Spring Hill natives, former NFL tight end for the Cleveland Browns, McDonald Oden, who is likely to attend.
You'll be all the more proud of the town you now call home by knowing who got their start here and all the great things they accomplished after growing up here.
This is part of the Spring Hill Historic Commission Speaker Series.
