A Holocaust Survivor Shares His Story In-Person
Come and meet one of the last Holocaust survivors who can still share his firsthand account of history.
Bernat ("Bernie") Rosner was just 12 years old when his family were sent to the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp. Raised in an Orthodox Jewish household, he was the only member of his family to survive the horrors of the Nazi regime. Bernie continues to share his story. "I am always willing to share because I am one of the last living eyewitnesses to a horrible time in our history. This story must be told."
In 1958, at the age of 16, Bernie immigrated to the United States, where he pursued higher education, earning degrees from Cornell University and Harvard Law School. He went on to have a distinguished legal career, representing the Safeway grocery chain for 35 years.
While living in California, Bernie formed an unlikely and profound friendship with a German man, a history professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Despite their vast different experiences - one as a survivor, the other as a young boy on the opposite side of history - they found common ground and coauthored An Uncommon Friendship: From Opposite Sides of the Holocaust. Their friendship stands as proof that understanding and unity can overcome ethnic divisions and make the world a better place.
